Basic First Aid Training and Certification
MINISTRY OF HEALTH APPROVED BASIC FIRST AID TRAINING
Definition and Legal Requirement
Basic First Aid Training is a mandated program that teaches non-medical interventions and techniques to prevent the worsening condition of a casualty and potentially save a life until professional medical teams arrive at the scene of an accident or emergency. This intervention must be non-pharmacological and use only readily available resources.
-
Legal Authorization: In Turkey, this training and certification can only be provided by First Aid Training Centers officially licensed and authorized by the T.R. Ministry of Health (MoH), and certification is finalized through an examination administered by the Provincial Health Directorate.
-
Legislation: According to the Turkish First Aid Regulation, workplaces are legally obligated to employ a specific number of personnel with a "First Aider Certificate," depending on their hazard class and the total number of employees.
Training Content and Duration
The training program, adhering to MoH standards, lasts a total of 16 hours (typically 2 days) and includes both theoretical knowledge and practical application:
-
General First Aid Information: Definition and purpose of first aid, fundamental first aid principles.
-
Basic Life Support (BLS): Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) techniques for adults, children, and infants, including the use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED).
-
First Aid for Injuries: Bleeding control, wound care, and infection prevention.
-
Emergency Situations: Proper intervention techniques for shock, unconsciousness (coma, fainting), fractures, dislocations, sprains, poisoning, burns, and heatstroke (e.g., Heimlich maneuver).
Certification and Validity
-
Examination Process: Upon completing the 16-hour training, participants undergo a written (theoretical) and practical examination supervised by MoH officials and the center's instructors. Candidates must score a minimum of 85 out of 100 on both exams.
-
Certificate and Identity Card: Successful candidates are awarded an MoH Approved First Aid Certificate and a First Aider Identity Card valid for 3 years.
-
Renewal (Refresher): Before the certificate expires (at the end of 3 years), the certification must be renewed by attending an 8-hour Refresher Training and successfully passing a new practical examination.
